I am very happy to introduce you to

Maria Zelasko Tomaselli, Contemporary Abstract Artist, who is exhibiting at the

Please leave comments for Maria here

“A Rising Star”

Maria Zelasko Tomaselli

Contemporary Abstract Awarded Artist

Like a rising star, Maria Zelasko Tomaselli has achieved major creative success during 2018 and 2019.  During this time, Maria’s inspiration gave her the courage to express herself through the arts, as never before.

She has received Certificates of Achievement in two international exhibitions and a place with a gallery in the world’s most famous Art Expo.

She has created ninety new mixed media art works and along with that she has found her unique art language which includes a poetic title for each work of art.

Where did this rising star come from?

Born in Poland, Maria was raised by her father Anthony and her mother Janina Zelasko near the village of Brzezna.  Her childhood was blessed with a natural farm setting and a supportive, loving family.  As a young girl, she was immersed in the beauty of nature.  Surrounded by pastures, forests and the security of her place within her family and in this small community, Maria grew more and more aware of nature and also how people within the farming community interacted to the various cycles of nature.  When she was ten, Maria recalls creating a “Monet” style painting of a cherry tree in bloom at the Brzezna elementary school.  She remembers feeling a magical joy as she painted and amazement with the finished art work.  As she grew older, these memories and the foundation they provided for her creativity, has never left her.

Maria was twenty-two when she moved to New York to live with her brother Anthony and her viewpoint began to expand with new and vibrant experiences.  She studied English at Brooklyn College and Hunter College in New York and she obtained her U.S.A. Citizenship.  Living in New York, she was fascinated by the immense energy that can only be found in New York. N.Y., U.S.A.

Now, Maria’s mixed media art works spring from the memories of her delightful childhood in Poland and her many years of marriage, having children, working and living in the U.S.A. in large cities and small country communities.   Maria’s experimental mixed media art works emerge from her solid and devoted commitment to her own creative process. Her own internal personal reaction to all that she senses becomes the essence of her creations.

About six years ago, Maria went with determination to an art shop, purchased supplies and began to paint with acrylics.  Then she experimented with mixed media using egg shells, fabric and many other objects.  She receives support from family, friends and the internet.  Maria says, “The artist’s world has changed today.  I have had great exposure for my art works and incredible feedback on the internet.  It is amazing to have artist friends around the world.”  She has been invited to exhibit in 2019 at a gallery in France through a Linked in friend’s suggestion. Maria began to sell her artworks from her home studio several years ago.

PREDICTION OF LIFE Mixed Media Acrylic on paper 12 x 12 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2018 (c) Copyrighted All Rights Reserved

The first half of her creative process is the physical making of the art work.  The second half that truly completes her creations is the inclusion of a poetic title.

While creating the mixed media art work, she is fearless in avoiding a similar scale and only one media.  Her art works evolve moment by moment as lines and shapes float to the surface of her awareness and are integrated with found objects.  She simply chooses her materials and creates her masterpieces with complete integrity.

After the physical art work is completed, the second half of her creation is the poetic title. She is courageously true to herself as she recognizes which emotion has been expressed.  Then she creates the edge of a poem for the title.   These lines of poetry that she conceives as her titles seem to resonate with the very core of our human emotional experience.

It is unusual to conceive of a title as being of such importance to a work of art.  However, the poetry in her titling is an essential part of these creations.  Her titles are rivers of ancient and modern dreams.  They spill over with a medieval connotation and there is a particular contemporary edge within each title.

MODERN CONFLICT Acrylic 24 x 30 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2018 (c) Copyrighted All rights reserved

We can relate to these poetic titles in a micro-personal manner or view the poetic titles with a macro-universal perspective.  The relationship to the work is up to the viewer.  Although this has certainly been done before, combining poetry with art is Maria Zelasko Tomaselli’s particular spark of genius and within each series of art works, the poetry and the images merge together to form an unflinching view of our world.

GATE OF THE RAINBOW Mixed Media on paper 12 x 12 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2018 (c) Copyrighted All rights reserved –

In an earlier and more playful artwork, “Gate of the Rainbow,” she paints a quirky door in the middle of a luminous and puffy space, as if it is waiting for someone to open it.  This can become an energetic, hopeful and playful promise to the viewer.

INDESTRUCTIBLE SEQUENCE Mixed Media 18 x 24 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli

The mixed media artwork “Indestructible Sequence” can be read as an expression of the age of technology or any other stressful situation and how we may become emotionally locked into a repeating pattern of dependency.

GARDEN ROMANCE Acrylic on paper 18 x 24 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2018 (c) Copyrighted All rights reserved

While the acrylic painting “Garden Romance” with a few strokes and drops of acrylic paint expresses the joy and delight of romance and the viewer may see brilliant flowers and dancing people within these shapes.

VENDETTA OF A FALLEN TYRANT Mixed Media Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2019 (c) Copyrighted All Rights Reserved

Within “Vendetta of a Fallen Tyrant,” Maria is exploring many different textures and layering much deeper on the canvas.  There is a particular sense of past and present in this art work as seen in the areas on the left side of the painting and in the lower right corner are definitely receding, in the distance, from another time. We can see these areas as separate and apart from the lines running horizontally across the lower half of the left side which serve to further emphasize this distance.  These lines can express to the viewer that there can be no entrance even though they are as slender as threads!  One can imagine faces in the upper portion and two or three figures in the bottom on the left side.  The lower right corner containing white allow us to enter this image but we are aware of the triangular shape and we move past this upon the thin white lines to embrace the solid textured golden ground.  There is no exit from this island of gold suggesting even further that a safe haven has been reached. When I consider the poetic title and look deeply at this art work, I feel that the fallen tyrant is captured in the dark areas of this canvas and although the title suggests a continuing vendetta, I see that a war has been won by the secure golden ground!

I believe it is important to see and understand that Maria is presenting, in all of her poetic titles and within her images a clear and uncompromising view of the pain of darkness, the anguish of loss, the inevitable human passage into death or mini deaths of our personality.  In this sense, she reminds us of the Spanish legend of “El Duende,” the spirit wind that carries the story about the dark edges of humanity to the storyteller, poet, performer or painter.  “Vendetta of a Fallen Tyrant” is just such a poetic art work.

When asked to talk about her poetic titles Maria says, “I take my time before I name my work! This is very important to me.  Sometimes this can take a few days as I carefully chose the title!  I like my titles to be mysterious, contradicting and dramatic!”

It is rare to find an artist that brings to our world continuous creative gifts through her art works.  Remarkably, these art works express the world of naturally fleeting emotional moments experienced throughout the centuries.  Maria Zelasko Tomaselli’s art language is characterized by her authentic and unique expression of quintessential emotions, her mastery of the materials and her use of poetic Universal titles.

SKETCH OF CRYING DANCE Acrylic 36 X 24 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2018 (c) Copyrighted All rights reserved

Maria is currently studying at LWSA with Laara WilliamSen, Art Educator and International Professional Painter of Canada.  She is now in her Fourth Semester and completed her first three semesters with a Certificate of Achievement in Painting and Professional Development scoring an A plus grade.  She continues her studies at LWSA in Private Tutorial Classes.

THE INTERIOR OF DEATH Acrylic 22 x 28 inches Maria Zelasko Tomaselli 2019 (c) Copyrighted All rights reserved

Maria’s states her intention in creating her artwork, “When my art works are finished, I hope that my viewers will get a piece of me, my life, my imagination and a deeper look into my soul! But as my titles go, I want to engage them into thinking and that’s the reason I stay mysterious!”

Through out her latest series of art works, MODERN CONFLICT, Maria seems to be asking us to look deeply at not only her world but also our own way of thinking and being in our world.

So how did this rising star accomplish her achievements!

In May of 2018, she began confidently to enter Art Competitions and also began plans for her first solo exhibition.

In June of 2018, she was honored to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence for being selected as one of the top 50 artists in the 27th Artavita International Online Contest, U.S.A.

Because of that Award, she was invited by the Artavita gallery to join a major art event.  She accepted and now is a participant in the 2019 New York Art Expo, Pier 92 which runs from April 4 – 7th. 2019.

This year she also received from the Circle Foundation Arts, an Artist of the Year Award Finalist Certificate as one of the top 150 runners up.

As a result of this award, she is now represented online as a Featured Artist by the Circle Art Foundation in France and she is featured in their upcoming  March 2019 issue of the “Spotlight,” magazine.

Her solo exhibition at Wooster Hollow Café in Ridgefield, CT, U.S.A. during December, January and finishing in February 2019 was very successful!

Maria Zelasko Tomaselli’s contemporary abstract artworks are held in private collections throughout the U.S.A.

The first month of a year always feels fresh. The cold atmosphere makes everything smell fresh; snow transforms the outer world. It is an open time, a time to wonder. Wondering can take us back to a place within, when curiosity was a constant presence. For nearly a month our garden has been visited by this sparrow hawk. It is beautiful, sleek and decisive. (There are many more feathers on the ground than in previous winters.)
“When Hawk swoops into your life be ready for a whole new level of awareness developing in your mind and spirit. Hawk bears observation skills and broad perspectives on His wings. You could not ask for a better companion…..
Hawk is often a messenger from Angels, Devas and the Divine. He signals a time in your life when you need to focus on what’s ahead and prepare for a leadership role. Your global vision is a potent helpmate in this. Just as the Hawk, you are ready to fly higher than ever before.”
For more on how animals are harbingers of many things, visit here: https://whatismyspiritanimal.com/spirit-totem-power-animal-meanings/birds/hawk-symbolism-meaning/For a few days, I wondered how they knew when Hawk was about. The feeder would be full, and seed scattered on the ground; but the garden bare of birds. Later in the day, 14 morning doves would be feasting away, and more than 20 sparrows taking raucous turns at the stocked tube. Sometimes this dance of present/absent goes on all day.I wonder what the birds do when they get cold. I often wonder where birds sleep at night. I wonder what they dream about. What do birds see out of their eyes? Do they take in a lot more information than we do; and is time faster or slower in their experience of it?
I’ve often wondered what the clouds do at night; what might they wish for?
I’m less interested in wondering about things I can easily answer. What a mean, tight place that puts the imagination! What are you wondering about?

There’s a terrific exhibition at the Westchester Community College Fine Arts Gallery through March 10, 2018.

Séance, by Carla Rae Johnson.

She says this about her work:
“My sculpture is directly connected to ideas and often addresses issues of social, political, and cultural import.   As an artist, I find the most challenging forms and concepts at the intersection of the visual and the verbal.  Begun in 2000, “The Séance Series” suggests imagined meetings between unlikely pairs; creative individuals that never met during their lifetimes:   Emily Dickinson with Marcel Duchamp, Hildegard of Bingen with Herman Melville, Bessie Smith with Ludwig van Beethoven and Audre Lorde with Abraham Lincoln.

Each of the pairs in “ The Séance Series” plays a game. Lorde and Lincoln play “bridge.”   This bridge is not a card game, but a physical, symbolic span across an obstacle.   I think Audre Lorde would have confronted Lincoln on issues of race, power, and privilege, so it is Lincoln who must build the bridge.   Not a straightforward crossing, this is a difficult, jagged transition; composed of huge steps, twists, inclines, and internal tensions.   At the top of the center of the crossing is a “spirit-level” symbolic of the quest to equalize and create a more level ground.   Beneath the bridge sits the “house.” Emblematic of the existing social structure, “the master’s house,” is the obstacle that must be bridged with understanding and common ground, level ground, so that together Lorde and Lincoln can dismantle its walls and work toward a just future.

Above Right: Audre Lorde Meets Abraham Lincoln, from The Séance Series, 2nd view, wood & rope, 75″x96″x48″, 2007

Above Left: Hildegard von Bingen Meets Herman Melville, from The Séance Series, DETAIL, wood (maple), 54″x36″x71”, 2001

There is a short time, called “slack tide,” when the currents change direction and the river becomes still like glass. That is the only time we see reflections of the buildings on the river. At sunrise in summer, the light turns stone and glass into one of the natural wonders of our planet.

Hello to all of my friends around the world!

Soon September will be here and the first semester of my new online art school will be starting.  I am happy to let you know that I have all the technical systems in place to get started with a limited number of students.

Because I do Private Tutorials, I will only take up to 15 students. I will be teaching;

  • Painting or
  • Professional Development for artists

I work individually with each student and we work on the program of activities that will best help the student to discover more about their painting.  Also I do Private Tutorials to assist students with their professional development in the arts.

I am available in between classes to answer questions.

Each week I prepare a class just for the student and this usually can take me up to two hours.

The class is one hour online through a meeting service where we can see each other and chat back and forth.  I can view the student’s artworks and give them feedback.  They can discuss with me what they are not happy with and I will give them choices about changing certain areas of their painting.

Then the student will go to the online course and pick up their written notes for that class and also the video of our one hour online discussion.  I will leave an assignment for them in their online course to complete.

Once, their assignment is completed, I leave my personal remarks for them and once again the student is welcome to call me between classes.

I have been teaching in my own art school, Laara WilliamSen School of Art for more than 30 years and I have served over 10,000 happy students.

Alice and her daughter creating in Italy at the Ozu Cultural Center Studio!

So if you are interested……my promise to you is that I will “outcare” every other art teacher because I am experienced and I put my heart and soul into each student’s program.

The other big advantage is that you can work at your own pace.

You can complete this course in two to three months. You keep all videos, lesson notes, assignments and my comments for your lifetime.

As long as you complete your course within 18 months of your enrollment date, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Laara WilliamSen School of Art.  It is okay to take longer if required.  You do not receive a Certificate of Achievement after eighteen months, but it is important to me that you progress at your own pace of learning.

Also LWSA has a 30 day money back guarantee!

Have a look!  And by becoming one of my first online students at Laara WilliamSen School of Art’s students you will save 45%

Laara WilliamSen visiting Francis Pratt at the Montmiral School of Art April 2014

Laara WilliamSen visiting Francis Pratt at the Montmiral School of Art April 2014

April, 2014

I travel down a narrow cobbled lane where the springtime heat bounces off the high stone walls. The air is scented with fresh baking and something more; the sense of an ancient road well traveled.

Around the next corner, I have arrived at The Painting School of Montmiral in France!  As I enter the building, I am at once at ease in the cool air and heavy stone walls supported with huge old wooden cross beams.

Coming down the stone stairs to welcome me is Francis Pratt, a true Master of Painting, Art Education and Science!  It is my pleasure to introduce to you this brilliant person and his passion for sharing his knowledge!

FRANCIS PRATT AND THE PAINTING SCHOOL OF MONTMIRAL

Francis Pratt’s quest for knowledge is only surpassed by his passion for sharing this knowledge. His many years practice as an artist, of research into questions relating to drawing and painting and of working as an Art Educator informed his decision to move to France and begin his own art school. It took Francis Pratt just a few months to organize and establish The Painting School Montmiral in May, 1988.

With excitement he gathered up all of his collective artistic and scientific knowledge and his skills as an Art Educator to create the Art School courses.  His years of seeking the truth about creativity along with his years of teaching art became fully expressed in the content of the Courses offered at the Art School.  He then refined and tailored his Courses to individually facilitate for the students.

As a testament to the success of his vast knowledge and experience, The Painting School of Montmiral has been operating with success for twenty eight years.  Thousands of students from beginners through to professionals have taken his Courses and each one leaves with confidence, a new way of viewing the world and practical skills to enhance their future paintings.

A very different and vastly more interesting type of artistic education than I have met before.” Yolande Hart

A magical place, good company, intensely stimulating ideas and teaching. I came to Montmiral to have my eyes stretched and I do not think I have ever looked so hard.” – Unity Couzens

“This course, with its application and explanation of the latest researches in both colour and line psychology, completely redefines and resolves the anomalies of what we see. The reference to proven research and the patient explanations of its implications with respect to how the brain receives and interprets information provides a fundamentally sound approach commonly lacking in other courses and literature.” – Iain McCowan

Francis Pratt is writing, what I consider to be, a manifesto that is very important to our contemporary art world. We are in an age of rapid scientific discovery and his writing includes this along with many other areas of his studies to redefine how we view art and making art. Here he shares his thoughts and a brief sketch of his writings.

“As for my writing, apart from contributions to the scientific literature, I have written articles for popular art magazines such as The Artist, the Artist and Illustrators Magazine and Modern Painters. Currently, I am writing four interrelated books, all of which are the fruits of a lifetime of pursuing my quest for a deeper understanding of the subjects of creativity and self expression.”

Painting is fun

Below he outlines his four interrelated books and/or his manifesto.

1: “What Scientists can Learn from Artists” describes the scientific experiments and ideas that played such an important role in determining the content of my teaching. The research had its origin in a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of established artistic practices and teaching methods that emerged from my efforts to help my students at every level.

2: Drawing on Both sides of the Brain” is a compendium of two books that concentrates exclusively on line drawing. They are “Drawing with Feeling” and “Drawing with Knowledge”. The approach is, first, to explain what I see as the strengths and weaknesses of traditional artistic practices and teaching methods and, then, to suggest how the weaknesses can be overcome using the new ideas coming from my research.

3: “Painting with Light and Colour” is also a compendium of two books: “Painting with Light” and “Painting with Colour”. As with the two books on drawing, both provide critiques of traditional ideas and practices, many of which have been submerged by the processes of history. The remainder of the books resuscitate submerged ideas in the light of recent research and add many new ones. Topics dealt with include “illusory pictorial space, whole-field colour and lightness relations, harmony/discord, shadows, shading and highlights and new perspectives on local colour interactions.

A principal underlying both practical books is to spend as little time as possible on topics that have been well dealt with in the past.

4: “New Perspectives on Creativity” is relevant to all domains of creativity, although the bulk of the new ideas presented come from a combination of my scientific studies and my research into the history of Modernism in Painting and the cornucopia of new approaches that it spawned, a subject that runs as a leitmotif through all four books. It is argued that the roots of all subsequent progressive painting and conceptual art are to be found in the last decades of the nineteenth century.

Francis Pratt – EDUCATION

At the Academic Community of the Wilno University in London Francis Pratt studied under Professor Marian Bohusz-Szyszko, Polish artist and teacher. Bohusz-Szyszko influenced him so deeply that these teachings became the foundation of his life as an artist and later as a scientist and art educator.

During the following years, Francis Pratt spent twelve years at the University of Stirling, first, as Cottrell Memorial Fellow and, then, as Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology. The first of these two appointments was as an artist and enabled him to work on a project that involved exploring new approaches to colour in painting. The the second of them allowed him to do research on how artists use their eyes when drawing and painting. During this time he worked with colleagues from various departments, with expertise in the psychology of perception, developmental psychology, neurophysiology and computer modeling. He says, “I took on the Research Fellowship because I saw it as an opportunity for at least seeking answers to many seemingly insoluble questions that had arisen in the classroom and in my own work during the previous twelve years, during which I had been teaching painting and drawing at all levels from evening class to postgraduate.”

He attended the Bath Academy of Art earning a degree equivalent Dip AD and then he studied at the University of Bristol, Department of Education earning an ATD which is an art teaching qualification.

His activities included wide ranging research into

  • the psychology of perception,
  • developmental psychology and
  • Neurophysiology.

EXPERIENCE AS AN ART EDUCATOR

Francis Pratt has taught figure drawing and painting in various Institutes of Further Education and, as a Visiting Lecturer, has been employed at all levels in Art Schools, especially for his knowledge of colour. For more detailed information please see the Course Director page on the Painting School of Montmiral website.

Color Mixing

Color Mixing

It is rare to find a Painting School not only based on individualization for each student but a Painting School that includes the enormous professional research in both art and science that Francis Pratt has achieved.

Francis is the most remarkable teacher of painting I believe you will find. I first encountered him when my mother, who had been a painter for over fifty years, returned from his course with some beautiful and exciting paintings, the like of which she had never done.

He had somehow managed to nudge her forward just enough to produce towards the end of her life some brave and surprisingly beautiful landscapes which challenged much of what she had done before.

He then took me on, a difficult unschooled banker who wanted to find out if he had any talent as a painter late in life. Francis provided me very easily with the tools, not only to progress and judge my own work, but to give me the means to look at the work of serious painters with a really appreciative and informed eye.

His teaching is not difficult to take on board if you have had no teaching before or if you are open to change. He distills the very essence of how the eye and the brain work in looking at images and how this translates into working on a canvas or a sketch book.

The reward is self evident in the quality of the output. His influence and effect on me has been transformative. I have an enormous amount to thank him for.” – Paul Zuckerman, a banker, on behalf of myself and my mother Joan, an exhibiting artist.

Francis Pratt at The Painting School of Montmiral aims to help students to be better able to solve their own problems so that when the course is over they go home with confidence and the knowledge to assist them in their future paintings.  Francis Pratt comments, “I have been delighted that the courses in Montmiral have attracted students of all levels, using a wide range of mediums and with very different goals, from slavish accuracy to abstraction and self expression.”

The Painting School of Montmiral is the very essence of Francis Pratt’s ever increasing knowledge and creative skills. For Francis it is all about each student fulfilling their own aspirations!

REVIEWS OF “SETTING THE FIRES“ Poetry book by Darlene Pagen

“Oh, Darlene Pagan, where have you been all my reading life with your hard-hitting poems, your luminous words, your insights and mesmerizing cadences, your stories, your quirky visions, your lines so sharp and well-honed they glint like a knife edge as they cut through to the heart, your singular strategies with language, metaphor, with silences and syntax, your way of looking at the world? Here are poems I’ve been hungering to read, the poet I’ve been waiting to discover.”

  • JULIA ALVAREZ, author of Homecoming, The Woman I Kept to Myself, In the Time of the Butterflies.

“A lively sensibility is at work and play in Setting the Fires.  Irreverent and fully American, these poems are crackling with irrepressible humor and an eye for the quirky detail.  I also admire their clear language and scopy of subject matter, from childhood to adulthood, from the personal to the political, they leave a record of a self wide awake to the world.“

  • DORIANNE LAUX, author of sThe Book of men, Facts About the Moon.

“In SETTING THE FIRES, by Darlene Pagan, fire is a literal combustion and a huger that claims both the natural world and the human heart.  Whether in the passion between lovers, the wonder of childhood, the threat of violence, or in the seed of inspiration, fire is an element of loss and destruction necessary for renewal and cleansing.

Darlene Pagan is the auther of a chapbook of poems BLUE GHOSTS (Finishing Line Press 2011).  Her poems and essays have appeared in many journals, including Field Magazine, Calyx, Hiram Poetry Revoew and Literal Latte, and earned national awards and nominations for Pushcart Prizes and Best of the Net.  She teaches at Pacific University in Forest Grove Oregon.“Text above is copyrighted (c) 2015 by Airlie Press, Portland, Oregon.  Published with permission of the author, Darlene Pagan.
