Laara WilliamSen visiting Francis Pratt at the Montmiral School of Art April 2014

Laara WilliamSen visiting Francis Pratt at the Montmiral School of Art April 2014

April, 2014

I travel down a narrow cobbled lane where the springtime heat bounces off the high stone walls. The air is scented with fresh baking and something more; the sense of an ancient road well traveled.

Around the next corner, I have arrived at The Painting School of Montmiral in France!  As I enter the building, I am at once at ease in the cool air and heavy stone walls supported with huge old wooden cross beams.

Coming down the stone stairs to welcome me is Francis Pratt, a true Master of Painting, Art Education and Science!  It is my pleasure to introduce to you this brilliant person and his passion for sharing his knowledge!

FRANCIS PRATT AND THE PAINTING SCHOOL OF MONTMIRAL

http://www.painting-school.com

Francis Pratt's students at The Montmiral School of Art

Francis Pratt’s students at The Montmiral School of Art

Francis Pratt’s quest for knowledge is only surpassed by his passion for sharing this knowledge. His many years practice as an artist, of research into questions relating to drawing and painting and of working as an Art Educator informed his decision to move to France and begin his own art school. It took Francis Pratt just a few months to organize and establish The Painting School Montmiral in May, 1988.

With excitement he gathered up all of his collective artistic and scientific knowledge and his skills as an Art Educator to create the Art School courses.  His years of seeking the truth about creativity along with his years of teaching art became fully expressed in the content of the Courses offered at the Art School.  He then refined and tailored his Courses to individually facilitate for the students.

Student painting on the Esplanadee

Student painting on the Esplanadee

As a testament to the success of his vast knowledge and experience, The Painting School of Montmiral has been operating with success for twenty eight years.  Thousands of students from beginners through to professionals have taken his Courses and each one leaves with confidence, a new way of viewing the world and practical skills to enhance their future paintings.

A very different and vastly more interesting type of artistic education than I have met before.” Yolande Hart

A magical place, good company, intensely stimulating ideas and teaching. I came to Montmiral to have my eyes stretched and I do not think I have ever looked so hard.” – Unity Couzens

“This course, with its application and explanation of the latest researches in both colour and line psychology, completely redefines and resolves the anomalies of what we see. The reference to proven research and the patient explanations of its implications with respect to how the brain receives and interprets information provides a fundamentally sound approach commonly lacking in other courses and literature.” – Iain McCowan

Painting in the Sunflowers

Painting in the Sunflowers

Francis Pratt is writing, what I consider to be, a manifesto that is very important to our contemporary art world. We are in an age of rapid scientific discovery and his writing includes this along with many other areas of his studies to redefine how we view art and making art. Here he shares his thoughts and a brief sketch of his writings.

“As for my writing, apart from contributions to the scientific literature, I have written articles for popular art magazines such as The Artist, the Artist and Illustrators Magazine and Modern Painters. Currently, I am writing four interrelated books, all of which are the fruits of a lifetime of pursuing my quest for a deeper understanding of the subjects of creativity and self expression.”

Painting is fun

Painting is fun

Below he outlines his four interrelated books and/or his manifesto.

1: “What Scientists can Learn from Artists” describes the scientific experiments and ideas that played such an important role in determining the content of my teaching. The research had its origin in a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of established artistic practices and teaching methods that emerged from my efforts to help my students at every level.

2: Drawing on Both sides of the Brain” is a compendium of two books that concentrates exclusively on line drawing. They are “Drawing with Feeling” and “Drawing with Knowledge”. The approach is, first, to explain what I see as the strengths and weaknesses of traditional artistic practices and teaching methods and, then, to suggest how the weaknesses can be overcome using the new ideas coming from my research.

3: “Painting with Light and Colour” is also a compendium of two books: “Painting with Light” and “Painting with Colour”. As with the two books on drawing, both provide critiques of traditional ideas and practices, many of which have been submerged by the processes of history. The remainder of the books resuscitate submerged ideas in the light of recent research and add many new ones. Topics dealt with include “illusory pictorial space, whole-field colour and lightness relations, harmony/discord, shadows, shading and highlights and new perspectives on local colour interactions.

A principal underlying both practical books is to spend as little time as possible on topics that have been well dealt with in the past.

4: “New Perspectives on Creativity” is relevant to all domains of creativity, although the bulk of the new ideas presented come from a combination of my scientific studies and my research into the history of Modernism in Painting and the cornucopia of new approaches that it spawned, a subject that runs as a leitmotif through all four books. It is argued that the roots of all subsequent progressive painting and conceptual art are to be found in the last decades of the nineteenth century.

Francis Pratt – EDUCATION

At the Academic Community of the Wilno University in London Francis Pratt studied under Professor Marian Bohusz-Szyszko, Polish artist and teacher. Bohusz-Szyszko influenced him so deeply that these teachings became the foundation of his life as an artist and later as a scientist and art educator.

During the following years, Francis Pratt spent twelve years at the University of Stirling, first, as Cottrell Memorial Fellow and, then, as Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology. The first of these two appointments was as an artist and enabled him to work on a project that involved exploring new approaches to colour in painting. The the second of them allowed him to do research on how artists use their eyes when drawing and painting. During this time he worked with colleagues from various departments, with expertise in the psychology of perception, developmental psychology, neurophysiology and computer modeling. He says, “I took on the Research Fellowship because I saw it as an opportunity for at least seeking answers to many seemingly insoluble questions that had arisen in the classroom and in my own work during the previous twelve years, during which I had been teaching painting and drawing at all levels from evening class to postgraduate.”

He attended the Bath Academy of Art earning a degree equivalent Dip AD and then he studied at the University of Bristol, Department of Education earning an ATD which is an art teaching qualification.

His activities included wide ranging research into

  • the psychology of perception,
  • developmental psychology and
  • Neurophysiology.

EXPERIENCE AS AN ART EDUCATOR

Francis Pratt has taught figure drawing and painting in various Institutes of Further Education and, as a Visiting Lecturer, has been employed at all levels in Art Schools, especially for his knowledge of colour. For more detailed information please see the Course Director page on the Painting School of Montmiral website.

Color Mixing

Color Mixing

It is rare to find a Painting School not only based on individualization for each student but a Painting School that includes the enormous professional research in both art and science that Francis Pratt has achieved.

Francis is the most remarkable teacher of painting I believe you will find. I first encountered him when my mother, who had been a painter for over fifty years, returned from his course with some beautiful and exciting paintings, the like of which she had never done.

He had somehow managed to nudge her forward just enough to produce towards the end of her life some brave and surprisingly beautiful landscapes which challenged much of what she had done before.

He then took me on, a difficult unschooled banker who wanted to find out if he had any talent as a painter late in life. Francis provided me very easily with the tools, not only to progress and judge my own work, but to give me the means to look at the work of serious painters with a really appreciative and informed eye.

His teaching is not difficult to take on board if you have had no teaching before or if you are open to change. He distills the very essence of how the eye and the brain work in looking at images and how this translates into working on a canvas or a sketch book.

The reward is self evident in the quality of the output. His influence and effect on me has been transformative. I have an enormous amount to thank him for.” – Paul Zuckerman, a banker, on behalf of myself and my mother Joan, an exhibiting artist.

Francis Pratt at The Painting School of Montmiral aims to help students to be better able to solve their own problems so that when the course is over they go home with confidence and the knowledge to assist them in their future paintings.  Francis Pratt comments, “I have been delighted that the courses in Montmiral have attracted students of all levels, using a wide range of mediums and with very different goals, from slavish accuracy to abstraction and self expression.”

The Painting School of Montmiral is the very essence of Francis Pratt’s ever increasing knowledge and creative skills. For Francis it is all about each student fulfilling their own aspirations!

IMMOS JALASS International Contemporary Artist

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Immo Jalass, an International Contemporary Artist, who has made astounding creative growth from his youthful drawings to his art work of today; an infinite exploration of creating original digitally created works of art!  Please enjoy the gallery at the end of the article, where you can click on each image and hope you enjoy as well as the enlarged images of his vibrant art works throughout the interview!

INTERVIEW WITH IMMO JALASS,

International Contemporary Artist on March 20th, 2015

Hello Immo

Here are a few questions that we can start with and please just answer in the way you feel most comfortable.

Were you creative as a child and if so how old were you and what do you remember from this experience?

At the age of fourteen, I started drawing with pencil and ink; all the old farm houses in Hamburg-Volksdorf and the landscapes around.

When did you realize that you were an artist?

An Art scene 4 de Original Art by IMMO JALASS (C) Copyrighted 2015 All rights reserves

An Art scene 4 de Original Art by IMMO JALASS (C) Copyrighted 2015 All rights reserves

At the age of twenty-six, on Ibiza working with pencils, color pencils, ink, gouache, water color and oil; working out themes oriented on the figuetrees, the rockets, the sandbeaches and the water.  Doing sketching and drawing sessions with a sculptor friend.

What has influenced your artworks. Other artists, Teachers, (I am referring to your artwork before you transitioned) ?

Jens Cords in Hamburg. He was preparing his own oil colors. My sculptor friend on Ibiza and many other artists around as Bechthold, David Walsh.

Did you have any formal training?

No, never. I am completely self taught. As such I have been working for the Famous Artists Schools in Amsterdam as an Art Instructor for more than a year.

When you began to transition to digital art, what led you to do this?

Already in 1972, I did some theoretical study on computer basics in Amsterdam.

In 1994, I started to work with my first own computer inspired by a friend in Hamburg, just for interest and

in 1998 I began my first artistical approaches with Corel Draw. It has been just the curiosity searching for new possibilities to express the feelings and thoughts of my life.

Can you explain the difference in media – one is very tactile and the other is created through technology – how does this affect your process?

I wouldn’t say that the difference in media affects or affected the process of creating. I am loving, for example, all the possibilities of getting a change in color and structure on a whole picture with a few mouse clicks. On the other hand, I am some times too lazy to work out more details.

Now I am creating digital art works since years and some of them makes me look at them again, again and again, wondering some times how have I been able to create this whatever. Associating the world around and reflecting my feelings, means giving my interpretation. Sometimes I feel like being some kind of an organism directed by the subconscious, by feelings, moments, situations, technical possibilities, wondering what will come out next.

Can you talk about your art making process a little bit in the transition work?

4 Bild245 Original Art by IMMO JALASS (C) Copyrighted 2015 All Rights Reserved

Bild245 Original Art by IMMO JALASS (C) Copyrighted 2015 All Rights Reserved

In most cases I started with one or two photos. In the meantime though, it has been a long time since I started with a completely new photo. In fact, today there is already a huge stock of existing digitally created art works and more often it happens that I go on working on already existing pictures, from which new pictures are created. Furthermore, I am more often copying an existing picture into another already-existing art work, giving transparency to it, and thus making a completely new picture, where new forms and colors appear as if they were coming out of infinity. These new forms and pictures can end up taking forms and shapes that I myself, have not even thought of. Fortunately, as a digital artist I am able to go on working on an existing picture without losing the original (the first) picture. In this situation a whole new motif-sequence can develop.

Do you choose a theme or series of art works or do you work one at a time.

I am working on all my art works one after the other, some times only just a few things, often until a new variation is created worth to be saved as a completely new art work or just a new piece in an existing series. Seldom having a certain theme, it is mostly a completely unconscious process choosing a theme to work on.

What is your greatest accomplishment that you are happy about in your career as a professional artist

In Progress: “Future Fun Conquest“ a digitally created art show by Immo Jalass at the Carl Benz Cloud University. A new kind of art meets a new kind of Gallery. The opening will be on the 30th of march this year.

Have you had any interviews or reviews and if so can we link this page to them so our readers can learn more about you?

  1. Solomon Walker writing about me on the occasion of my solo exhibition “Immos universe” at the MoDFA (autumn 2014):  http://galeriejalass.tripod.com
  2. ArticulAction’s interview with me on:  http://galeriejalass.tripod.com/interviewed.htm
  3. Several reviews on http://galeriejalass.tripod.com/rezensionen.htm

Do you have any comments or thoughts that may improve the current contemporary art world?

Generally needed is the development of facilities to show digital art works. For example galleries equipped with digital displays (best without a frame), public displays to show more digitally created art, displays for the office and nice private displays for the living rooms.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions for emerging artists just beginning in digital art?

Should emerging artists have been working with pencil and ink before starting in digital art? The technical possibilities are developing. Should they start working on some kinds of drawing pads? Sketching their ideas on paper or digitally? Other possibilities? New possibilities?

Those are interesting suggestions for emerging artists!  I believe as you have suggested that both sketching first or going right to the digital program that allows for sketching are excellent possiblities.  Thank you Immo.

Thank you so much Immo. It is a pleasure to feature your amazing creativity as well as your successful international art career!

Thanks to Solomon Walker, I will now include an important quote regarding IMMO JALASS’ artworks:

Solomon Walker commenting on Immo Jalass: “Immo Jalass is an autodidact.; a self-taught extraordinary creative artist, whose vast body of captivating artwork journeys through several fertile decades, touching on nearly all the major art movements of the 20th century. And, given all that, the most surprising thing about Immo’s artistic output is, that the work remains unique and totally Immo Jalass, even in this early dawn of the 21st century. Teamed with an enthusiastic curiosity that fuels his vision, his creative input and output is tremendous. He is a thoughtful and generous being, who is always ready to share his knowledge and to lend assistance to his fellows. I highly recommend Immo Jalass for any artistic endeavours he pursues or that are proposed for him; and of course, I highly support and recommend his artist work to buyers and collectors at all levels.”

To my many friends around the world!

I would like to take a moment to wish you so much Love and Peace in 2015!  I am thrilled that once again I was included in the PEACE PROJECT’S traveling exhibition and that a print of my art work is available for sale to help with the good works that the PEACE PROJECT will accomplish in the future

During the past 5 years,  just a small bit of what the PEACE PROJECT has accomplished;

Designed a house that has around $500 in building materials and completed construction of our first community of 40 houses, plus communal restrooms, for those that lost everything in Typhoon Haiyan.

  • Continued to support the education of several dozen children in Sierra Leone.
  • Held The Peace Project’s 5th Annual Call for Artists and Traveling Exhibit.
  • Produced two outdoor art festivals “Affair of the Arts” in Culver City, California.
  • Opened six exhibits at The Whole 9 Gallery and hosted dozens of events designed to sell art, raise
funds, build community and spark discussion of important social issues.
And these are only a few of their gifts to the world.  Please visit http://www.thewhole9.com and check out Peace Project.

So even at this tender age, Ashley was confidently creating her own originals by changing a blue sky to purple or white flowers to pinks.  She knew from the beginning that she was entitled to her own creative process and she changed the forms and colors to her liking.

Ashley attended Springvale Primary School in Centurion, South Africa.   It felt right to her to stay within the lines as one teacher suggested and this was the early beginnings of her beautiful symbolic art works.

Ashley moved to South Surrey, B.C., Canada in 2001 and attended Semiahmoo Secondary School.  She excelled in her art classes and loved learning how to use various media such as pastels, pencils, acrylics and clay.  She found her teachers were very helpful.  Once again, in her teenage years, she began to incorporate certain symbols into her art works furthering the use of lines. She loved to do tribal work and drew many faces.  This education definitely contributed to her strength as an artist.

Her true foundation and education in art was accomplished during six years of private tutorial with Chris Lagalisse, Artist and  Art Educator.  Chris Lagalisse studied at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  He has a Bachelor of Arts and Education Degree and is a licensed instructor.  Her private tutorials were at the Neighbourhood Art Studio in White Rock, B.C.  Chris Lagalisse’s creative guidance and critiques immensely assisted Ashley to gain true confidence in herself as an artist and to develop her own unique art language.

Working in her own studio she began to experiment by adding various materials to the acrylic paint such as sand, wood, or beads.  She now creates her works of art using totally archival materials.

When Ashley paints she feels electrified and explosive.  Her sense of physical space and time fades away.  She believes that she is that divinely guided and inspired.  She receives vibrational energies and visions that she recreates in her amazing art works.  Her clear use of line and symbols as well as mixed media has formed the basis of Ashley Jackson’s resolved works of art.

Ashley is very aware of all the challenges people face in their minds.  She experienced a difficult time of shadows and her faith has brought her into a place full of optimism and light. She adds,

“That is why I use rich, intense colors and exhilarating energy. Creation is larger than us. I know it’s not just me!  I am being guided to paint these messages of love and hope.  I really can see that.”

Her intention once she has completed an artwork is that this may become a message of love and hope.  She believes that people need to experience something beautiful.  Ashley says, “I am trying to reach the viewer’s soul and leave an imprint of Light, Love, Hope and any positive emotion that will help to shift their energy, even if only for a brief moment.”

She has completed several portrait commissions and among these paintings is a portrait of a young boy who died at the age of 13 years.  She was able to intuit his surroundings and paint these surroundings accurately which made his family and friends very happy.  When she paints a new portrait she likes to show the subject’s personal growth and those particular surroundings that have deep meaning to them.

Ashley exhibited at the Fleetwood Festival of the Arts,  Fleetwood 84th Ave Cafe, StreetFEST, Surrey,B.C. Canada August 3rd, 2014.  There she created a community painting with her words “Hope and Love” in the centre and she invited others to add their own thoughts. The title of the painting is “Community” and it is sized 24 inches x 36 inches.  This spontaneous interactive creation helped to strengthen the values of each individual who participated and of the whole community that viewed the art work!
