Hello to my friends around the world!

I am so happy to have Karen’s okay to go ahead and share her newsletter.  Every month, I receive it and enjoy the poems, her thoughts and her awesome paintings as well as her news.  I always feel better after reading it.  So I invite you to enjoy it this month along with me.  You will also see that she has included a write up about me!  Near the bottom!  So please share this post on Linked in, Twitter or wherever else you wish to share it.

I send to all of you – Love and Light,

Laara WilliamSen,

The first month of a year always feels fresh. The cold atmosphere makes everything smell fresh; snow transforms the outer world. It is an open time, a time to wonder. Wondering can take us back to a place within, when curiosity was a constant presence. For nearly a month our garden has been visited by this sparrow hawk. It is beautiful, sleek and decisive. (There are many more feathers on the ground than in previous winters.)
“When Hawk swoops into your life be ready for a whole new level of awareness developing in your mind and spirit. Hawk bears observation skills and broad perspectives on His wings. You could not ask for a better companion…..
Hawk is often a messenger from Angels, Devas and the Divine. He signals a time in your life when you need to focus on what’s ahead and prepare for a leadership role. Your global vision is a potent helpmate in this. Just as the Hawk, you are ready to fly higher than ever before.”
For more on how animals are harbingers of many things, visit here: https://whatismyspiritanimal.com/spirit-totem-power-animal-meanings/birds/hawk-symbolism-meaning/For a few days, I wondered how they knew when Hawk was about. The feeder would be full, and seed scattered on the ground; but the garden bare of birds. Later in the day, 14 morning doves would be feasting away, and more than 20 sparrows taking raucous turns at the stocked tube. Sometimes this dance of present/absent goes on all day.I wonder what the birds do when they get cold. I often wonder where birds sleep at night. I wonder what they dream about. What do birds see out of their eyes? Do they take in a lot more information than we do; and is time faster or slower in their experience of it?
I’ve often wondered what the clouds do at night; what might they wish for?
I’m less interested in wondering about things I can easily answer. What a mean, tight place that puts the imagination! What are you wondering about?

There’s a terrific exhibition at the Westchester Community College Fine Arts Gallery through March 10, 2018.

Séance, by Carla Rae Johnson.

She says this about her work:
“My sculpture is directly connected to ideas and often addresses issues of social, political, and cultural import.   As an artist, I find the most challenging forms and concepts at the intersection of the visual and the verbal.  Begun in 2000, “The Séance Series” suggests imagined meetings between unlikely pairs; creative individuals that never met during their lifetimes:   Emily Dickinson with Marcel Duchamp, Hildegard of Bingen with Herman Melville, Bessie Smith with Ludwig van Beethoven and Audre Lorde with Abraham Lincoln.

Each of the pairs in “ The Séance Series” plays a game. Lorde and Lincoln play “bridge.”   This bridge is not a card game, but a physical, symbolic span across an obstacle.   I think Audre Lorde would have confronted Lincoln on issues of race, power, and privilege, so it is Lincoln who must build the bridge.   Not a straightforward crossing, this is a difficult, jagged transition; composed of huge steps, twists, inclines, and internal tensions.   At the top of the center of the crossing is a “spirit-level” symbolic of the quest to equalize and create a more level ground.   Beneath the bridge sits the “house.” Emblematic of the existing social structure, “the master’s house,” is the obstacle that must be bridged with understanding and common ground, level ground, so that together Lorde and Lincoln can dismantle its walls and work toward a just future.

Above Right: Audre Lorde Meets Abraham Lincoln, from The Séance Series, 2nd view, wood & rope, 75″x96″x48″, 2007

Above Left: Hildegard von Bingen Meets Herman Melville, from The Séance Series, DETAIL, wood (maple), 54″x36″x71”, 2001

Above: LOOKING IN ON FLORENT II   oil on board  18” x 22”   2013 (framed) $ 2,200.00

Florent was an all night diner on Gansevoort Street in the Meat Packing District in Manhattan, close to where the Whitney Museum is now. The food was cheap, the ambience was artists. This view caught a glimpse of the interior from outside the window as I passed by on a busy Saturdayafternoon.
Below: THE UN AND CHRYSLER BUILDINGS AT SUNRISE  oil on linen  24″ x 29”   2017
$ 4,600  (strip-framed)
There is a short time, called “slack tide,” when the currents change direction and the river becomes still like glass. That is the only time we see reflections of the buildings on the river. At sunrise in summer, the light turns stone and glass into one of the natural wonders of our planet.

ART – PROTECTION MASKS

MORGAN’S CROSSING GROUP EXHIBITION

I am happy to be sharing the space at Morgan’s Crossing  group exhibition with the up and coming artist, Irma Bjidemast.  Irma began painting about two years ago and has completed well over 200 paintings.

Protection Masks, acrylic, 12 x 36 inches by Irma Bijdemast

IRMA’S  exhibition schedule reads like a professionals with over twenty group exhibitions, awards and solo exhibitions to her credit!  Recently she was featured on a television program and she really gave a wonderful, clear professional artist statement.  So today I am pleased to feature one of her latest art works entitled “Protection Masks!

I am reminded of the ancient world when I view Irma’s “Protection Masks” as well as the theatre and our very human need to “mask” our natures.  Her use of acrylic paint however brings this art work clearly into our contemporary world and the intensity of colours coupled with a high glaze represent to me a futuristic view.  Thus she has bridged the ancient, the contemporary and the future with her creative vision and her art language!

For further information or to purchase this very unique art work please contact Irma at irmabijdemast@shaw.ca

Just a reminder the MORGANS CROSSING GROUP EXHIBITION is on from September 2nd to October 3rd at #110 – 15715 Croydon Drive, South Surrey, B.C.  The other artists exhibiting are ART GIDDINGS, DRENA HAMBROOK, JESS RICE, DONNA SCHIPFEL and of course myself, LAARA WILLIAMSEN.  Hours of operation are Thursdays and Fridays; 12 to 8 pm, Saturdays 10 – 6 pm and Sundays 12 – 4 pm.  If you are in the area please drop by.  If not, you can always grab the RSS feed to stay posted.

Wishing you all much creative success and happy days!

Laara WilliamSen
