PRESS RELEASE

FROM TREES TO SKY”

Solo exhibition of paintings by Laara WilliamSen

at Small Rituals Coffee Society

1237 Johnston Road, White Rock, B.C.

Opening December 11th, 2-4pm Runs December 9th to January 5th

The art work for the exhibition “From Trees to Sky” at Small Rituals Coffee Society was inspired by Laara WilliamSen’s fascination with our responses to the infinite movement, colors and textures within both our world and our universe. Of her painting she says, “Growing up in the country, I was fortunate to work and play in the forests and fields and to witness the changing seasons. That childhood inspiration has never left me and today I live next to parkland and near to the ocean so I am moved to transform my memories as well as my daily sights of nature onto the canvas.”

“My painting process also involves my belief. I have always been fascinated with people and how we relate to each other and I am aware of a Power Greater than myself that I believe connects us all. I sense deeply that we are all one heartbeat, one breath, one grand song! To incorporate some portion of this belief into my art works, as best I can, I meditate. Then I work in the moment and usually with my fingertips.”

“Although my intention is that the paintings in this exhibition may uplift and possibly bring a new sense of connectivity to the viewers, once I have completed a painting, I believe that the viewers are free to interpret the painting in their own way.”

At the age of 19 years, Laara was fortunate to study with the international artist, Robert E. Wood in both his New Westminster and North Vancouver, B.C. studios where he taught her the basics of oil painting. During her twenties, she painted as many as six paintings a day one on top of another on cardboard in her garage studio. Often, she painted nature from memory. At this time, she also began to sell her paintings on canvas from her home studio through personal referrals. Laara attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. and graduated in 1988 with a four year major in Interdisciplinary studies. During the past thirty-five years, she has had sixty-eight solo exhibitions and has been included in over seventy group exhibitions. Her art works are held in collections in Canada, the USA, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, China, Thailand and Australia.

“From Trees to Sky” a collection of her paintings featuring the Universe and also our Fraser Valley trees, is being shown at SMALL RITUALS COFFEE SOCIETY, 1237 Johnston Road, White Rock, B.C. from December 9th to January 5th. Meet the artist on Sunday, December 11th between 2 and 4pm when she will have unframed portfolio art works for sale as well. Call 604 536 0139 for information.

'HEAVEN" Original painting by Hans Mertens (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with permission of the artist.

It is my joy to introduce you to my Linked in friend and fellow Contemporary Fine artist HANS MERTENS!

Born in the Netherlands, in a village called Reuver, Hans Mertens’ great natural talent was evident during his childhood in the many perceptive and detailed drawings he did at home and at school.  He received his foundation and formal art education at The School of the Arts, HBO, in the Netherlands and graduated in 1991.  Continuing his studies over the next six years, he completed many art courses, learning various painting techniques and styles.  At this time, Mertens learned the “sfumato” technique, introduced by Leonardo da Vinci.  During the years that followed, as an emerging artist, his fascination for ancient myths led  Mertens to utilize these techniques of the Renaissance Masters to depict a series of paintings with mysterious legendary content.  Using several coats of varnish, “Penelope’s Prayer,” “Cherchez la femme,” and “Helen of Troy” were painted in this enduring technique.

Throughout his creative career, Mertens has contributed to charity by donating a painting in Barletta, Italy and he founded the Ferrara-collective which is a group of  international artist-friends.  In 2009 he created a website for artists all over the world :

http://hansmertens.socialgo.com/.

Hans Mertens cordially extends an invitation to artists from around the world to visit and join the website.

He  also became the first international artist who was allowed to collaborate with Marlena and Robbie Burger in Orlando, Florida, who printed his abstract works on Habotai silk scarves for women as a special present.  You can view his creations at http://www.designerscarvesbymarlena.com/MeetHans.html

'THANK YOU VINCENT' Original painting by Hans Mertens (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with the permission of the artist.

Hans Mertens says, “Being a teacher also, I had to be able to teach my students to paint like the Impressionists; like Monet and also Van Gogh.  So the  painting “Thank you Vincent” is a tribute to Van Gogh.”

"LE CANAVAL DES ANIMAUX" Original painting by Hans Mertens (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with the permission of the artist.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

From his early beginnings to this present day, Hans Mertens’ art work has evolved into colorful, textured abstraction expressions.  Themes that have been repeatedly found in his art work are; spiritual subjects, mythology and classic tales.  Within each abstract art work, there is a deep sense of the mystical movements that he once depicted in detail.  The atmospheric, abstracted layers of paint  in Hans Mertens’ paintings keep the tradition of these mysteries alive while bridging the gap between classical and contemporary techniques and vision.  One can easily find the rhythms of the ancients bubbling with passion in “Heaven” and “Le Carnaval des Animaux.”

Hans Mertens has had thirty five exhibitions in Holland and in 2006 he became internationally known, selling his paintings in New York, U.S.A., Kirksville, U.S.A. and in other locations in the U.S.A.   His exhibitions include both group and solo shows in Wales, United Kingdom, in Ferrara, Trani and Barletta in Italy, in Leipzig , Germany and in Istanbul, Turkey.

Please visit his website at http//www.hansmertens.nl/index_en.html to view more of Hans Mertens’ artworks!
