DORIS ANDERSON’S “joy de vive” is evident in each new art work. She works quickly and intuitively, choosing harmonious colours and contrasting tones. She makes various marks on the canvas including drawing back into the paint to reveal the undercoat. Each painting contains progressive layers which may impact the viewer with a sense of the splendour of musical rhythms or of a natural energetic vitality. This combination of accomplished artistic technique and mastery of dynamic content is the essence of Doris Anderson’s authentic art language. Her confident paintings are truly an emissary for dynamic visual journeys.

Her education includes private tutorial with Laara WilliamSen, International professional painter from 2012 to present, Concordia University, part time studies from 1969 to 1972 and full time Dedicated Art Classes at Dunton High School in Montreal from 1966 to 1969.  She has also spent time developing her knowledge of contemporary and modern art by visiting several Museums in the past years.

Laara WilliamSen, Painter

BIOGRAPHY

May 15, 1946, New Westminster, B.C. Canada

Laara WilliamSen has been painting and drawing since the age of 4 years. Growing up in the country, immersed in the seasons and surrounded by a large extended family and a supportive country community she received much encouragement to continue her drawings as a child.

At the age of 19 years, she was fortunate to study with the international artist, Robert E. Wood in both his New Westminster and North Vancouver, B.C. studios where he taught her the basics of oil painting. During her twenties, she painted as many as six paintings a day one on top of another on cardboard in her garage studio. Often, she painted nature from memory. At this time, she also began to sell her paintings from her home studio through personal referrals.

Laara WilliamSen attended the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. Canada and graduated in 1988 with a four year major in Interdisciplinary studies. She has been deeply influenced by the art works of W. Kandinsky, Georgia O’Keefe, Frieda Kahlo, Emily Carr and the works of the Impressionists and Fauve artists. The city and street people inspire her to paint as does the forest, ocean and stars. She is fascinated by our responses to the infinite cycles within both nature and human nature. Colour and texture are important to her. In the end, although she creates the painting, she believes that once it is completed the painting has a life of its own.

She has received six international awards; exhibited solo over seventy times and participated in over eighty group exhibitions. During the past three years, she has been honored to be selected to participate in twenty-one international group exhibitions.

Throughout the past thirty-five years, she has been fortunate to have her artworks held in collections in Canada, the U.S.A., Mexico, the U.K., Poland, Germany, France, Portugal, Thailand, China and Australia.

I was particularly pleased to become involved as the Sum of All Moments is not a business: They are offering fellow artists access to another venue to show off their talents without having to pay membership or submission fees.

The Sum of All Moments Studios Fine Art was founded in 2009 by Jessica Lynn Carroll of Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada.  This past October the Sum of All Moments Studios became a public online site not only to showcase fellow artists but also to raise funds for the Cumberland Cancer Assistance Program and the Cumberland Health Care Foundation of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Sum of All Moments is donating 10% of all art sales as well as 50% of all donations to these causes.

Another goal of the Sum of All Moments is to bring  a “brick-and-mortar” studio to the community of Springhill, Nova Scotia Canada.  This will be achieved through donations of 20% of all art sales as well as 50% of all outright donations towards this goal.   This studio will provide a creative outlet for the youth and local art enthusiasts of our community as well as hold gallery exhibitions representing Canadian artists.

I am thrilled to be the FEATURED ARTIST for the month of February, 2013.

GEOMETRY by Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves

Wednesday 1 February – Wednesday 12 September 2012
Dawn – 12 midnight

GEOMETRY was made possible with a grant from The Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund and is supported by The London Borough of Hounslow. The installation will be opened by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London on Thursday 2 February and will run until the end of September 2012.

GEOMETRY is a kinetic installation that uses light as a means of communication and is inspired by such communication devices as light houses, military signal lights and the Morse code. The interplay of the different movements of the sculpture create a symbolic language of communication between the sculpture and the viewer.
GEOMETRY exploits wind-farm technology to drive two masts which cross (one vertically one horizontally) on which mirrors are attached. The reflection of the sky in the mirrored blades and the movement of the sculpture itself create different kinetic effects according to the time of the day and season. At nightfall the signal is reinforced through projections of laser light from the horizontal mast. Laser lines will be projected from the Watermans building onto the horizontal mast and reflected from the sky.

Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves explores the meaning and impact of light through her work. She uses light and sound technologies to create a mysterious art of beauty and power, challenging the boundaries of her materials and our own perceptions of them. The resulting kinetic work appears frameless and seems to possess a life of its own. Her audience is invited to engage in both the works’ seductive simplicity and delve into their complex layers of mystery.
Key examples of D’Estienne d’Orves’ work include Gong: a resonant, pulsating, often frightening work from her Cosmos Series in 2009 and Monolithe, in 2008, which stands like a futuristic needle-point surrounded by ancient spiritual drama and was presented at Paris’ all-night art happening, Nuit Blanche.
In 2004, Félicie founded the in-visible collective, a conceptual multi-media studio, In-visible – http://www.feliciedestiennedorves.com/

Technical support has been provided by Mechatronic company Bonfiglioli who delivered the motor solutions for the installation. Watermans would also like to acknowledge the contribution of David Simpson of Show Laser Systems for the laser technology, Michel Delarasse and the Institut Français.
GEOMETRY is part of the International Festival of Digital Art 2012 – http://www.watermans.org.uk/exhibitions/exhibitions/international-festival-of-digital-art-2012.aspx

Cymatics by Suguru Goto

Produced by Action Sharing

Saturday 7 January – Sunday 19 February 2012

Daily 12 noon – 9 pm, Free

Cymatics is a kinetic sound sculpture that expresses the artist’s vision of nature through a series of symbolic elements that are used harmoniously in a technological context.

Cymatics creates real spaces that are metaphysical and spiritual at the same time. A place where art is a bridge between the material and the spiritual, between technology and nature, and between the humanities and science. The result is a harmonic vision of the elements of nature, demonstrating the morphogenic effect of sound waves (cymatics).

The creative process involved building a synergy between music to be seen and images to be heard, so as to create a sensorial performance for the complexity of human perception.

Goto’s works have been performed at major festivals. In 1998, he was invited to perform at Sonar, Barcelona; in 2003, he gave a concert at the Pompidou Centre, in Paris; in 2011 performed at Share Festival and in 2009 his ’Robotic Music’ was shown at the 53rd Venice Biennale  in Italy.

Cymatics is the second project to be produced by Action Sharing, an initiative proudly sponsored by the Torino Chamber of Commerce.

Action Sharing is designed to create a platform for syncretic research, encouraging the convergence of art, innovation and science. Based in Turin (IT) and directed by Simona Lodi and Chiara Garibaldi, Action Sharing is the only project of its kind in Europe to give artists a team of robotics engineers, with specific high-level expertise, to produce works of visual art.

Watermans Riverside Gallery:
The aesthetics of disgust by Katrin Baumgarten

Sunday 22 January – Sunday 19 February 2012

“The revolting object exerts a certain ‘macabre attraction’ over the subject, leading to a peculiar absorption in the object and lending a magnetism to this aversion.” Kolonai, Aurel

The power of disgust affects us in every aspect of our life. Disgust shocks, entertains, and sears itself into memory. By introducing the aesthetics of disgust as a tool for design, one can intensify the user and object relationship through creating paradoxal emotions, going beyond practicality and functionality.

These eccentric light switches explore disgust and its possible transitions in the technological age. The exhibit consists of multiple designs of an everyday object, each based on a different approach to disgust, and to examine the provoked reactions. Every time a switch is pressed, a virtual light-bulb on a screen is lighting up as a feedback for the test-person. Through its simplicity and its everyday occurrence, the interaction with a switch has been marginalised into subconscious behaviour. But what if your interaction has consequences.

One of the switches has hairs that become erect when a finger approaches. Another secretes goo, one is made of fingernails and another of chewing gum. The most playful creation refuses to be
switched at all and hides when a finger approaches. The switches are monitored by an Arduino circuit board which records which was pressed, when and for how long.

One of the purposes of the work is to show that people are indeed both repelled and fascinated by the disgusting transformation of the switches.

Katrin Baumgarten holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and an MSc from Imperial College London. Her projects revolve around human-technology interaction and explore future possibilities within technology and art. She loves to see the magic that appears when an inanimate object suddenly starts to move and respond to external stimuli in ways normally attributed to humans. Katrin is freelancing for interactive design consultancies at the moment, as well as developing her own practice. http://katrinbaumgarten.de/

UKO POST

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Uko Post, a Contemporary Fine Artist who was born in Meppel, the Netherlands, in 1954.   In his last primary school class, he became more interested in drawing because there was a project to complete for the national holiday for the queen. This project was organized in all the primary schools in Meppel. He received early recognition of his creativity when his  drawing was chosen to hang in the local newspaper window.  In 1969, he went with his father to the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam and viewed the Rembrandt exhibition.  He  was so impressed by the paintings of Rembrandt, that he decided to become a painter.  Although this was against the will of his parents, he did not loose his vision and he received his artistic training  at the Academy Minerva of Fine Arts in Groningen in the Netherlands from 1972 to 1978.   There he was introduced to realism and was taught by Diederik Kraay Poel, Wout Muller, Ger SIKS and Geert Meijer.  Uko Post is member of the Dutch Northern Realists also known as the Noordelijke Realisten.

Since 1994, he has lived and worked  in Belgium in the tranquil region of Sankt Vith, Eifel, known for the ancient Celtic magic of this region.

“ENTRANCE TROYE” Original painting by Uko Post (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with the permission of the artist

He has been deeply inspired by the Magical Realism of the nineteen thirties and painters that he admires from this period are Pyke Koch, Wim Schuhmacher, Raoul Hynkes, Dick Ket and Carel A.C.Willink. He is also a great admirer of the Flemish Primitives such as Jan van Eick and Memling.

“VANITAS WITH HALF APPLE” Original painting by Uko Post (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with the permission of the artist

Uko Post is a Master Painter who paints the fragility of our earthly existence. He is always seeking content that mirrors his feelings and he is often inspired by the history of mankind and the history of art.

He says, “I create what I create because it feels good for myself to work in that way.  It is a part of my vision on the world and on myself as a human beïng……I disassociate myself from the mainstream. I am not searching for the temporary but rather the timeless, that occupies and binds us as humans.

The same thing that binds us together, also divides us to the bone of the matter, where to there is no answer to be found.”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

In a metaphorical sense, each  painting created by Uko Post is a self portrait and yet once each painting is completed, it begins a magical life of it’s own depicting quintessential states of being.  When we view Uko Post’s paintings that evoke the various eternal stages of  life, decline and death or “vanitas,” it is obvious that these art works spring from his matured vision of that evolution which both builds and divides our lives.

“DEAD BULLFINCH” Original painting by Uko Post (c) COPYRIGHTED 2011 All Rights Reserved. Used with the permission of the artist

It is not surprising then that Uko Post’s paintings are also often associated with the Magical Realists of the twentieth century and that his art works are revered and exhibited throughout Europe.

Some of his recent exhibitions include  Hospital Gallery Pruem, Germany, Gallery Hohenbusch Gruefflingen Gallery, Belgium, Gallery Dogan, Blaue Galerie, Schoenecken, Germany, Museum Altes Amt Schoenberg, Germany.

Uko Post is a truth seeker, a visionary and one who does not compromise to accommodate modern trends.  The results are evident in each of his hauntingly beautiful works of art that challenge us to look and then look again at the very core of what makes our souls resonate with life and death.  Because of his uncompromising choice of subject matter and his excellent mastery of the technical skills of painting,  Uko Post’s creations provide us with an unforgettable journey through a  myriad of feelings and states of beings!

Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, founded in 1861 by Louis Martinet and Theophile Gautier, and then refounded in 1890 around Messonier of Puvis de Chavanne. The quarrels of strong personalities and squabbles led the demerger of several companies of artists.
Encouraged by the Minister of Culture, a company known as “Historical Shows” were reconciled around a common living room at the Grand Palais and the National Society of Fine Arts joined them in 2006. But his presence at the Grand Palais remains on the sidelines of the annual event it organizes in the Salle Le Nôtre at the Carrousel du Louvre where SNBA highlights the multiplicity of trends in contemporary art and vitality.
In the heart of Paris, this show offers its participants a high quality service and exclusive facilities. In addition to French artists, this show hosts delegations from Brazil, Canada, People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Spain, U.S., Japan, Turkey, Italy , United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany. It’s an international event ..
